About and methodology

Last updated 24 September 2026

ainsfw.tools is a directory of adult AI chat platforms and of the characters you can talk to on them. Our editors review 28 platforms and index 14,590 characters taken from their public catalogues, linking out to each one. Below you can read who is behind the site, where our information comes from, how we score and rank platforms, how often data is refreshed and how to flag an error.

Who runs this site

A small team operates ainsfw.tools, and our editors write the reviews and guides and keep them current. Get in touch at admin@ainsfw.tools or use the contact page.

What the site is, and what it is not

  • It is a directory. Every platform gets a review covering prices, free tier limits, features, privacy, payment details, pros and cons. Our character index, best-of lists, comparisons and guides all draw on that same data.
  • It is not a chat service. We run no chats, create no characters and process no payments. Once you click through, the platform handles your conversation, subscription and data under its own terms.
  • It is for adults only. Nothing on this site is meant for anyone under 18.

How we collect platform facts

We begin every review with the platform's official pages, such as its pricing page, terms of service, privacy policy, FAQ and help centre. Those details are then compared with recent reviews from independent sources. If a number is only visible after creating an account, or the platform keeps it private, we rely on the newest published source available.

Each review lists:

  • the sources it used, linked;
  • anything we were unable to confirm;
  • when its prices were last checked.

The "from" price is the cheapest monthly cost across all plans. If you need a longer commitment to get it, the review notes that (for instance "billed yearly") and shows the monthly rolling price alongside it when one exists. Prices move frequently, so check the platform before paying.

How we collect characters

Each night we pull characters from the public catalogues of 28 platforms. For every character we keep its name, description, tags, public stats like chat counts and a resized version of its picture, plus a link back to its page on the platform. The names, descriptions and pictures remain the property of the platforms and their creators.

Before any character goes live, it is checked against our content policy. Characters that fail are kept off the site entirely and their pictures are deleted. If a character drops out of a platform's catalogue, we hide it after 45 days.

How scores work

Our editors rate each platform from 1 to 10 against the same six criteria:

  • Chat quality: the strength of the writing, including staying in character, memory and consistency across long conversations.
  • Characters: the size of the library, how varied the styles are and what tools exist for building your own.
  • Features: voice, images, video, group chat, apps and similar extras.
  • Value: how much the free tier and paid plans give you for the money, counting credits that get used up.
  • Privacy and payments: how your data is used and stored, what sign-up requires, and payment choices like discreet billing or crypto.
  • Ease of use: signing up, the phone and desktop interface, and apps.

To get the overall score we take a simple average of the six and round it to one decimal place. All six scores appear in every review, each with a short note explaining it.

Chat quality is the toughest criterion to assess from public information. We base it on the models and memory features a platform documents and on recently published reviews. Where evidence is limited, the score stays moderate and the note makes that clear.

Visitor star ratings (1 to 5) and written reviews are displayed on their own and are kept apart from the editors' score. Each person can rate an item once, and written reviews are checked by a moderator before going live.

How ranking works

  • Numbered lists follow the overall score; if two platforms tie, a featured placement settles which appears first. The single exception is the best free list, which is sorted by how generous the free tier is, with the overall ranking used to break ties.
  • Some links are affiliate links; partner platforms are labelled.
  • The "Partner picks" box at the head of a list features as many as three platforms we hold a partner link with: the top-ranked partner on that list, the partner offering the most free use and the lowest-priced partner. Labels like "Best free" are only shown when that pick leads among every platform, not only partners. The box appears above the numbered list and leaves its order untouched.
  • Not every platform runs a partner programme. For those, the main button on their review and character pages points to a partner alternative and says so, while a plain link to the original platform remains beside it.
  • Anything sponsored carries a "Sponsored" label. Full details are in the affiliate disclosure.

How often we update

  • Characters: nightly.
  • Prices and free tiers: checked again on each platform's official pages, with the latest check date shown on every review.
  • Guides: every guide displays the date of its most recent update.

Corrections

Spotted a mistake? Email admin@ainsfw.tools or pick "A correction to an existing listing" on the submit page. Let us know which page it is, what needs changing and, ideally, a source. Once we verify the error, we correct it and refresh the checked date on the review.
