Spend any time on SpicyChat or other card-based chat sites and you will scroll past thousands of characters, each with a name, an avatar and a set of tags. Behind most of them sits a character card: a compact, portable persona definition that lots of platforms know how to load. Once you understand character cards, much of how these platforms behave starts to make sense.

What a character card contains
Inside a character card you will find the character's name and description, a short personality summary, a scenario, a first message and some sample dialogue. Certain formats also carry alternate greetings, a lorebook of facts about the world, and notes from the creator. All of this text is fed to the model before each reply, so every card has a token count: the larger the definition, the more context it eats, and the sooner the model may lose track of your chat.
Why one character shows up on many sites
A card is just a file. A creator posts it on one platform, then users download it and upload it somewhere else, so the same character can sit on three sites with three different chat counts. Each platform picks the model that runs the card, which means one card can play very differently from site to site.

How to judge a card before chatting
- Token count. Stay below 1,000 tokens and there is space for a long conversation; go past 2,500 and smaller models will start forgetting things.
- Greetings. Several greetings mean the creator wrote more than one opening, so choose the one that fits the scene you have in mind.
- Tags. Creators tag inconsistently from platform to platform, so on this site we map them onto a single set of categories.
- Any-POV versus fixed POV. A card aimed at one user gender will keep speaking to you that way, whatever you tell it.
What makes a character card good
Tight, specific descriptions work better than long ones. A good card has a clear scenario that gives the character a reason to talk to you, sample dialogue that shows how they sound, and a creator who revises it when the platform switches models. Chat counts help, but they track a card's age as much as its quality; a well-rated card from last month is often a safer choice than an old one with lots of chats.
Can I use a character card on any platform?
Most platforms built around cards can import the usual formats, while companion apps with their own character builders generally cannot. Our platform reviews say whether a site takes community cards.
Are character cards safe?
A card is only text plus an image, so any risk lies in what it contains. Every card we sync is checked against our content policy, and anything that fails is left out, but the platforms themselves host whatever their creators upload.
Why do chat counts differ so much between platforms?
Each platform only counts its own users. A card with a million chats in one place can be brand new somewhere else, so compare cards on the same platform rather than between them.
